The first .9999 pure silver coin available from the Perth Mint was the Australian Silver Kangaroo. Though an Australian Kangaroo bullion coin was available from the Perth Mint dating back to 1990, the silver version of the coin was not available until 2015 when the first-ever 2016-dated Silver Kangaroo debuted with .9999 pure silver content.

Coin Highlights:

  • Coins arrive inside of protective plastic flips, acrylic tubes of 25 coins, or mini-Monster Boxes of 250 coins!
  • 5th release of the Australian Silver Kangaroo bullion coins!
  • Contains 1 Troy oz of .9999 pure silver in BU condition.
  • Issued a face value of $1 (AUD) by Australia.
  • On the obverse side is the sixth-generation effigy of Queen Elizabeth II.
  • The reverse includes the famous image of the kangaroo from the Australian copper penny coinage.

All silver bullion coinage offered by the Perth Mint on a regular basis dating back to the 1990 release of the Australian Silver Kookaburra featured .999 pure silver content. It wasnt until the 2016 introduction of these Australian Silver Kangaroo coins that the Perth Mint had a .9999 pure silver coin in regular distribution.

The design on the Australian Silver Kangaroo Coins is inspired by the copper penny coins that debuted back in 1938. These coins featured a leaping kangaroo in left-profile relief with the commonwealth star of Australia. The specific design featured on these coins is inspired by Stuart Devlins red kangaroo coin design.

On the reverse of 2020 1 oz Australian Silver Kangaroo Coins is the image of a kangaroo leaping from right to left across the design field of the coins. The background field is filled by radial sunburst lines. Each coin has .9999 pure silver content and an engraving of Australian Kangaroo on the top rocker.

The obverse of 2020 Australian Silver Kangaroo Coins features the impressive sixth-generation effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. This image was created by Jody Clark and is based on the 2015 design for the Royal Mint of England. Unlike that design, this portrait of Her Majesty includes the Queens shoulders and neckline in an Australian coin portrait for the first time since 1966.

Australian Silver Kangaroo coins have sold some 26 million units since being introduced in 2016. The intense demand for these coins depleted the 2019 stock so quickly that 2020 date marked coins were moved up early in the release schedule.
